Series of Talks on Twelves Soul Qualities: Equality

Date: June 28, 2026

Venue: Ulsoor Bhavan, Bangalore

Sri Aurobindo Society Ulsoor Bhavan Centre, Bengaluru, Karnataka in collaboration with BhāratShakti, Sri Aurobindo Society, is planning to facilitate a series of talks for its community members which will be facilitated by Ms. Chitra Kolluru, one of BhāratShakti facilitators based in Bengaluru. This series of talks will be on the Twelves Soul Qualities from the Mother’s Symbol.

The first talk in the series was on Equality – Samatva. This topic was chosen as a logical next step to the series of talks on Life Lessons from the Bhagvad Gita delivered on June 13th and 14th by Dr. Beloo Mehra and Ms. Chitra Kolluru.

The talk on June 28, 2026 opened with a brief invocation of the Divine Mother with a Vedic hymn.

The one-hour-long talk by Ms. Kolluru touched upon the significance of the Mother’s symbol, the four soul forces of the Divine Mother followed by the 12 soul qualities. This helped lay the context for the rest of the talk which focused mainly on the principle of Equality.

In delving into the soul quality of Equality, Ms. Kolluru approached the topic from two different aspects – 1) how Sri Krishna explained Samatvam to Arjuna, and 2) what the Mother and Sri Aurobindo have said about Equanimity in daily life. Concepts such as Ego vs. Egoistic attitude and Equanimity as something more than mere indifference were discussed in depth with relevant examples to facilitate understanding.

Contextual examples from life and Puranic stories were used as tools to present Equality as a concept from various dimensions for the audience to appreciate how elusive this can be when putting into everyday practice.

The final part of the talk focused on Sri Aurobindo’s explanation of two sides of Equality namely, Passive and Active Equality, followed by a detailed set of extracts and points from his volume The Synthesis of Yoga to highlight the significance of Active Equality.

The talk was followed by an engaging conversation with members of the Ulsoor Bhavan community who brought up some thoughtful questions regarding the differences between Equanimity and Equality as well as Ego and Egoism.

The session came to a conclusion with a brief silence. It was agreed that the other soul qualities must be taken up subsequently to maintain the continuity on the theme in a regular study circle atmosphere in the light of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
