Date: February 26, 2019 Venue: Department of Applied Psychology, Pondicherry University
On February 26, 2019 Dr. Beloo Mehra, Senior Associate, SAFIC, delivered a special lecture on the topic – “LIFE BEAUTIFUL: HARMONY WITHIN AND WITHOUT” at the Department of Applied Psychology at Pondicherry University.
Starting with a brief elaboration of a key point made by Sri Aurobindo that “all problems of existence are essentially problems of harmony,” the lecture highlighted one of the important advice given by the Mother – “Look for the inner causes of disharmony much more than the outer ones. It is the inside which governs the outside” (CWM 14:185).
Specific examples were given to bring to light how practicing harmony is a continuous process and requires one to become conscious of the movements within, in all parts of one’s being. A couple of small stories were told to emphasise the need to constantly work out a harmonious organisation of one’s emotions, feelings, thoughts around whatever one considers as the highest ideal within.
To emphasise the Harmony aspect of the Indian view on Beauty and Art, again a few examples were given of ancient Indian architecture and sculpture. A powerpoint presentation was used to show the relevant pictures. While briefly discussing the Mahalakshmi aspect as the Power of Harmony and Beauty, Sri Aurobindo’s reference to the Triple Harmony between Love, Strength and Wisdom was explained with suitable examples.
The lecture was followed by a brief interaction with the students. This interaction further brought forth the point how arts and arts education can serve as important means to develop a deeper appreciation of harmony and beauty.
