Appreciating Indian Art – February 2025, Renaissance

Release of Renaissance, Volume VI, Issue 2
Date: February 21-24, 2025

We continue our exploration of the spirit and forms of Indian Art through a variety of offerings in the February 2025 issue. The issue focuses on a 2-part article by Dr. Beloo Mehra, Renaissance Editor, titled An Intuitive and Spiritual Eye to Appreciate Indian Art.

Sri Aurobindo says that soul realisation is the method of creation for an Indian artist. And naturally soul realisation must be the way of our response to Indian art. What does this mean in practice? Dr. Mehra gives an account of her growing understanding of this with the help of a few examples.

The issue also features part 4 of the ongoing series titled The Aims of Indian Art by Ananda Coomaraswamy. In this part, the author highlights that Art in India, including the artistic process used for decorative arts such as jewelry design, follows the essential Indian view, namely getting to the spirit of things and working out from that. He further emphasises the role of tradition and historic continuity in creative and artistic process.

This issue also welcomes Sunil Kumar as a new member of our authors team at Renaissance. As his first submission he pens a delightful book review of Ratul Chakraborty’s ‘Vritrahan’. Kumar’s review is just as poetic in its feel as the book it speaks of. He writes: “Ratul’s poetic masterpiece seamlessly blends myth and modernity, evoking the Vedic spirit through a cosmic dance of light and shadow. Its powerful imagery and philosophical depth show the enduring relevance of Dharmic thought in our ever-changing world.”
