मां भगवती का यज्ञ – The Sacrifice of the Divine Mother

Date: February 12, 2026

Venue: Sri Aurobindo Society, Surat

As part of the Mother’s birthday month celebrations at Sri Aurobindo Society, Surat, on February 12, 2026, Dr. Beloo Mehra, Director, BharatShakti was invited to deliver a talk at the Center’s Thursday Satsang gathering. Dr. Mehra spoke on the topic – The Sacrifice of the Divine Mother. As the talk was primarily delivered in Hindi, given the audience preference, she titled her talk as – “मां भगवती का यज्ञ”.

After a brief concentration with music and a welcome address by Shri Kaivalya Smart, Dr. Mehra began her talk by expressing gratitude to the Divine Mother to give her this opportunity to share a few words invoking the presence of our Sweet Mother. She said that February being the Mother’s birthday month, it serves as a special occasion for all of us to remember that to be Her child means that we keep kindling our aspiration to grow close to Her, to open ourselves more and more to Her Force, to Her Presence.

Referencing a few insights from Sri Aurobindo’s works such as Savitri and The Mother, Dr. Mehra briefly highlighted the Mother’s Avataric work. The Mother is the Supreme Creatrix, the consciousness and force of the Supreme, manifesting in transcendent, universal, and individual poises. Her present embodiment came with the mission to initiate a new creation founded on Supramental Consciousness. The Divine Mother herself consented to descend and manifest in creation to facilitate the course of the evolution of consciousness so that it could finally merge with its Divine source.

Dr. Mehra explained that the Mother’s arrival in India and her collaboration with Sri Aurobindo were essential for bringing down the Supramental Truth-Consciousness to transform earthly life. With the help of some profound quotes from Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, Dr. Mehra also highlighted the Mother’s work in mediating between human personality and divine nature, and her aim to hasten the rule of Divine Love upon earth.

Sri Aurobindo speaks of this Sacrifice of the Purusha as the original divine act of self-limitation and self-diffusion. The Purusha sacrifices its infinite wholeness by manifesting consciousness in a limited, veiled form to bring forth the cosmos and life. This primordial sacrifice is about Spirit entering matter, becoming involved in ignorance and finite existence, so that through this manifestation, Spirit can evolve, extend, and express itself in diversity. It is a sacrifice of descent from the transcendent unity into multiplicity and materiality, a surrender of infinite plenitude to serve creation’s unfolding.

But then Sri Aurobindo says that in reality this sacrifice is more of the Divine Mother, the Sacrifice of the Divine Shakti or creative Power. Dr. Mehra said that we can also think of it as a complementary movement as it is about the descent of that dynamic force by which evolution would become possible. It is this force which will undertake the hard labour of transformation and upliftment.

The Transcendent Mother, the Aditi, the Infinite Undivided Consciousness sacrifices herself completely by descending into the darkness and ignorance of this world. As Universal Mother, she has dispersed Herself in the deep Matter so that through her divine touch she can lead the Matter and the earth-Nature to their supreme destiny, through an integral transformation.

“Since the beginning of the earth, wherever and whenever there was the possibility of manifesting a ray of the Consciousness, I was there.” (The Mother, CWM, 13:37)

Dr. Mehra added that the Mother has even stooped down to the level of seemingly mechanical Nature for the purpose of the Divine Play, the Lila, though in doing this she still retains her vaster ways of being – that of the Force of the Supreme, the Supreme Creatrix and the Mother of the Universe, but she veils those vaster ways for the purpose of the Lila.

To specifically illustrate how the Supreme Mother worked in her present Individual poise as ‘The One Whom We Adore as the Mother’, Dr. Mehra shared a few accounts from sadhaks like Champaklal and Amal Kiran to illustrate the Mother’s loving yet firm guidance, her unconventional approach, and her grace in everyday interactions with the aspirants.

The talk was appreciated by the audience present at the Satsang. After a short note of gratitude followed by a brief meditation with music, the gathering dispersed for Prasad distribution.
